An organic shaped piece designed for Hermia in my adaption of A Midsummer Nights Dream, an internal state of confusion focusing on how social aspects influence gender traits, leading to gender gaps in society for women.
My costume for Hermia effectively represents her rebellion against societal norms in Athens and her journey through the forest of her mind. It visually describes her resistance to gender definitions and her quest for personal happiness. This interpretation aligns with the original themes of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, emphasising self-discovery and challenging societal constraints.
My design methodology was rooted in scientific studies, such as Gina Rippon’s research on neurosexism, Cordelia Fine’s work in Delusions of Gender, and The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, alongside external and personal insights into societal gender definitions. By exposing the absurdity of these stereotypes, I aim to provoke critical reflection and challenge societal limitations.
Final work produced as a short film & photoshoot.
